Beginning January 1, 2026, changes will be implemented in the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) recertification process. In an effort to streamline and professionalize ongoing training, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® (BACB®) will replace the annual competency assessment with a new requirement: 12 hours of professional development (PDUs) to be completed every two years.
This update reflects the BACB’s commitment to ensuring RBTs remain equipped with current, evidence-based practices that align with ethical and task-specific guidelines.
Key Requirements for RBT Professional Development
1. Total Hours
RBTs must complete a minimum of 12 PDUs (Professional Development Units) within each two-year recertification cycle.
2. Recertification Timeline
The recertification cycle will shift from one to two years, providing RBTs with more flexibility while maintaining high professional standards.
3. Content Relevance
All PDUs must focus on behavior-analytic service delivery and align with, as well as expand upon, the RBT Task List (2nd edition) and the RBT Ethics Code. PDU events must specifically be geared towards RBTs.
4. Ineligible Training
Training focused solely on a specific client’s programming does not qualify for PDU credit.
How to Earn Your 12 RBT PDUs
RBTs can meet the new requirements through three pathways:
- ACE Provider Events
Attend workshops, webinars, or courses offered by Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) Providers approved by the BACB. - In-Service Trainings
Participate in organization-led professional development facilitated by a qualified BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D. - University Coursework
Participate in organization-led professional development facilitated by a qualified BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D.
These updates represent a significant step in enhancing the RBT credential and ensuring that practitioners remain equipped with the most relevant, ethical, and effective tools for their work.
